Barnsley Metrodome’s new children’s adventure play area officially opened

Barnsley Metrodome’s new children’s adventure play area has been officially opened.

Adventure Reef offers fun for everyone – from toddlers to teens – with features including dedicated play zones for younger children, as well as more challenging areas for older kids with rope ladders, tunnels, climbing nets and scramble nets.

Other features include the Games Room – fully equipped with electronic darts, retro gaming and pool – an interactive Multiball sports wall, a dedicated sensory room and the Shark Shack cafe.

Facility Manager at Barnsley Metrodome Dave Gibson said: “We’re incredibly proud to officially open Adventure Reef.

“Seeing the facility fully operational and in use is a proud moment for everyone involved and marks a major milestone in what we can offer here at the Metrodome.

“When we sat down and looked at what Barnsley families needed, it became clear there was a real gap for a modern, high-quality, indoor play space that could cater for children of all ages, abilities and interests under one roof.

“Adventure Reef doesn’t stand alone. It sits alongside our much-loved waterpark and our two cafes, meaning families can now enjoy a full day out here at the Metrodome, whatever the weather.

“Adventure Reef is for the people of Barnsley. It’s for the families who have supported this venue for so many years and for the children who will make memories here for years to come.

“We’re also excited to welcome visitors from across the region who are looking for a brilliant day out.

“A big thank you to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life for their support throughout this project.”

Award winning community leisure trust BPL, which operates Barnsley Metrodome, worked with design and build specialists Greenspan Projects to bring the concept of Adventure Reef to life.

Project Manager at Greenspan Projects Neil Drissell added: “Barnsley Metrodome had a strong vision for Adventure Reef from the start and that was a great jumping off point.

“What our design team then did was take that brief and design a buildable environment that elevates the idea put to paper.

“This project is a great example of what happens when a client’s ambition and our team’s expertise in taking things from concept to completion are pointed in the same direction.”

Adventure Reef was officially opened by the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor David Leech, who, along with invited guests, enjoyed a tour of the facility.

Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, added: “Our partnership with Barnsley Premier Leisure plays an important role in helping us offer high‑quality leisure opportunities for families across Barnsley.

“Adventure Reef is a great example of how this collaboration creates welcoming, active spaces where children and young people can play, be healthy and build confidence.”

Councillor Kevin Osborne, Cabinet Support Member for Environment and Highways, attended the opening.

He added: “It was fantastic to be at the opening of Adventure Reef and see so many families enjoying the new play area.

“This is a brilliant addition to the Metrodome, giving children a fun, active and inspiring space to explore.

“I’m proud to see initiatives like this helping to create great experiences for our young people and supporting Barnsley as a place where families can thrive.”
